Once Internet entered our lives, there are updates daily. Maybe previously changes were done in the same style, but went unnoticed as there was no common platform for mankind across the planet to connect. We are able to virtually shake hands across continents now!

Now that Internet has brought us closer, we easily share each other's experiences in life and follow each other more rigorously. There are new terms and words being added constantly. One such word in the IT BPO sector in India is Medical Scribing.

So, what does a Medical scribe actually do?

You must have deduced by now that it is related to the healthcare sector due to the word "Medical". You are right! A medical scribe acts as a medical secretary. He becomes a part of the doctor's team.

In the US, it is mandatory to record all doctor-patient encounters in the form of dictations or records. The dictations need to be transcribed and the copies are sent to the Insurance payers as claims for payment.

So as a physician you are not only supposed to take care of the patient's health, but also record it in the form of medical charts for future reference to be used when needed. This adds to the burden of responsibilities. To overcome this, doctors have now come up with a novel way. Adding a Medical Scribe to your team will relieve the doctor of his clerical duties. The doctor's time is spent only in patient care exclusively. That is what a doctor was trained to do anyway.

Medical Transcriptionists and Medical Coders do the same task of taking care of a doctor's clerical duties. Medical transcriptionists transcribe the medical charts from the recorded dictations. Once the chart is ready, it is sent across to the coder for coding. Once the coder finishes this task, claims are sent across to Insurance payers.

Coming to Medical scribes, they are an enhanced breed. You can say they belong to the elite club. The reason being, you need to be well versed in Medical terminology, as well as English language, including good typing and listening skills. If you are adept in transposing the dictation into EHR, that would be an added advantage. You can also code your own charts if you know medical coding. The bottom line being, Medical Scribes actually lift the physician's documentation burden off his shoulders. This gives the doctor extra time with more patients.

The prediction is the demand for highly skilled medical scribes is going to surge in the near future!
